The definition of resilience according to the dictionary lists ideas such as elasticity agility, toughness, strength, speed of recovery and optimism. In human terms, resilience is one’s ability to react to stress and demands in their daily life.

Why is it that people can remain so calm and organized when having to face a fast approaching due dates, the long meetings, the chance of getting a pink slip, and the changes that come with the business? Why are these calm people the ones that always move forward in life and their jobs? In the work setting, people who show resiliency are better in handling the constant demands of the job, particularly when those demands make them cope with continuous changes of goals and a large amount of work.

Life’s Burdens and Resilience

Reform, reducing, unions, budget burdens, relocations, job uncertainty, and more are producing today’s irregular conditions, which makes it harder for the people that have less resiliency to have the success that they have earned. Resiliency is not a trait that is given to some people but not others and is not a passive quality, but an active process. The way we approach life and all that life can throw our way, effects our life experience. People that have resiliency do the things that help keep that reactiveness. It is also easy for the less resilient start making habits that increase the ability to be able to work under stress and to live better even when pushed to the breaking point.

Coping is Key

Anyone can learn how to cope with stress, misfortune, and doubt; they just have to develop behaviors, actions, and thoughts. This allows someone to create ways that help increase resiliency and self‐assurance. Experts say that people can be helped by a certain pattern of behaviors and talents that enable them to cope and have success under pressure.

  • Commitment
  • Control
  • Challenge

As said before, becoming resilient is a process that involves behavior, actions, and thoughts, anyone can do that.
